HEALTH AND SAFETY OBJECTIVES
What are Health and Safety objectives?
A health and safety program that aims to reduce employee harm can benefit from health and safety objectives. Therefore, fewer injuries and illnesses will occur at your workplace.
Depending on the health and safety environment at your workplace, it may be appropriate to have more than one objective. It is pertinent to write these objectives in accordance with the health and safety policy of the organization.
SMART methodology
- Specific – Clearly define and clearly communicate – for example, all departments of your organization will participate in joint hazard identification and risk assessment every three months.
- Measurable – Confirming the achievement of the objective should be simple. – are there records of hazard identification ‘walk-a rounds’ and meetings?
- Achievable – Goals that can be achieved within the time frame available. If most people don’t understand the basics of hazard identification and risk assessment, targets like ‘our work injuries will be reduced by 60% in 3 months’ may not be achievable.
- Realistic – Does this goal help add value and are they achievable. As well as being relevant to the size and type of the business, objectives should also be built on recent performance.
- Employees may become discouraged when targets are perceived as unrealistic.
- Time-bound – Within a defined period (usually twelve months or less), objectives should be specific and realistic enough that they can be achieved. Rather than breaking greater targets into smaller ones each year or month, it may be better to break them down into smaller objectives to track progress.
