What Are Hazards?
What are hazards?
Hazards are objects or situations that have the potential to cause harm to your employees, contractors, visitors, or the environment. When identifying hazards, it is very common to first classify the hazard based on the origin.
Classifying Hazards:
- Biological hazard – viruses, parasites, bacteria, food, fungi, and foreign toxins.
- Chemical hazard – acids, solvents, vapours, fumes, flammable materials.
- Physical hazard – earthquakes, floods, fires, and tornadoes.
- Ergonomic hazard – postures, vibration, repetitive motion, poor lighting.
- Mechanical hazard – motor vehicles, aircraft, air bags, compressed gases.
- Psychosocial hazard – occupational stress, workplace violence.
There is a difference between a hazard and a risk. Though often used interchangeably, the two terms mean very different things.
What is the Difference Between Hazards and Risks?
The terms can sometimes be used interchangeably, but they have slightly different meanings. A hazard is a possibility of something being harmful. The likelihood and probability of harm occurring is a risk.
What is hazard management?
Hazard management is a method for reducing the risk of harm being caused to employees and the environment by reducing hazards within the workplace. It involves identifying potential risks and introducing measures to reduce the likelihood of them occurring.
Healthier and safer workplaces can be achieved through effective hazard management procedures. In a stepped process, hazards are identified, risks are assessed and prioritised, control measures are implemented and finally, the effectiveness of the control measures is reviewed. The management of hazards and risks all play a role in preventing incidents and injuries.
