CODEX ALIMENTARIUS

What Is Codex Alimentarius?

The Latin word Codex Alimentarius means “food code”. In order to produce, store, deliver and transport food, your company can rely on Codex Alimentarius standards, guidelines and codes of practice. Food products supplied by importers will meet the specifications of Codex Alimentarius, so consumers and businesses can trust their food products to be safe and of high quality.

What is the role of Codex Alimentarius in food quality control?

In the context of food quality control, Codex Alimentarius is a non-profit organization responsible for setting international standards, protecting consumers’ health, and assuring fair trade in food.

In order to prove food quality control internationally, Codex Alimentarius provides businesses with a set of rules and guidelines to follow.

This is especially useful for companies operating in multiple countries across the globe as they can meet the Codex standards for each country, plus any additional regulations for that country. While meeting the Codex standards will meet the majority of the standards for each country, it is not always the case.

Are Codex standards mandatory?

There is no requirement for businesses to reach them.

In order to sell or process food in their own country, businesses have to comply with their own country’s legal requirements. Codex Alimentarius’ requirements generally coincide with a lot of these legal requirements.  The Codex standards will most likely be met regardless of whether you intentionally try to meet them or just comply with your country’s legal standards.
