Hazard Identification Tools and Techniques

To recap:

A hazard is a source, situation or acts with the potential to cause harm.

In order to achieve our Management system outcomes, we need to ensure that we are out of harm’s way.

Intended outcomes include:

1. Prevention of injury and ill-health

2. Prevention of pollution and environmental degradation

3. Ensuring business and customer needs are met

4. Ensuring legal and other compliance requirements are met

5. Improve performance and continual improvement

In this vlog, we look at the tools used to structure the management system in which to achieve the above-mentioned intended outcomes.

Let’s focus on Hazard Identification and the sources of information used to extract hazards from the discovery process issues which were previously identified .

Information sources include:

1. Plant and equipment manuals

2. JHA – JSA (Job Hazard Analysis)

These are the methodical steps relative to the piece of equipment or substance, what hazards are associated with these steps and the controls to consider.

3. MSDS – Material Safety Data Sheet

This is an aid to identify hazards and precautions

4. Hazards and aspect Checklist

This is used by a team of individuals to observe a task in which to identify specific hazards

Hazard Types:

1. Physical – objects, slippery floors, noise, light and heat

2. Chemical – Solid particles or fumes

– Liquid (mist/vapours)

– Gas

3. Ergonomic – What is the design layout of the premises, manual labour and repetitiveness

4. Mechanical – moving machinery and bits

5. Electric – live or static

6. Biological – exposure to virus or bacteria
